Why Your New Year’s Resolutions Might Not Be Working – And What to Do Instead

We’re already halfway through January, and many of us will be feeling a bit twitchy about those bold New Year’s resolutions we set a few weeks ago. The pressure of a new year can get us all revved up hoping for a fresh start and positive change, but for most, those good intentions don’t last beyond the first few weeks.

It’s not because we lack willpower or discipline, but because resolutions often set us up to fail. Understanding the common pitfalls behind failed resolutions can help you reframe your approach, making your goals more achievable and long-lasting.

Why resolutions don’t stick

  1. Too much, too soon

It’s tempting to go all-in at the start of the year with big, sweeping goals like “go to the gym every day” or “completely cut out sugar.” But life has a habit of getting in the way (and let’s face it, who wants to totally deprive themselves of cake?). Drastic changes can quickly become overwhelming, leading to burnout and a sense of failure. The key is to start small and build momentum.

  2. Vague goals

Resolutions like “be healthier” or “save money” lack focus. Without clear, measurable targets, it’s hard to know where to begin, or keep track of when you’ve succeeded.

  3. Trying to do it all at once

Taking on too many goals divides your energy and focus, making it harder to achieve any of them. Focusing on one or two priorities at a time dramatically increases your chances of success, and just one small change can soon become a life-changing habit.

  4. External expectations

Sometimes, we set resolutions based on what we think we should do rather than what truly matters to us. This lack of personal motivation often leads to resolutions being abandoned.

How to set yourself up for success

  • Set clear, achievable goals.

Think about specific, realistic outcomes. Instead of “exercise more,” try “go for a 20-minute walk three times a week.”

  • Understand your “why”

Reflect on why this goal matters to you. What are you doing it for? How do you think you'll feel when you achieve it? A resolution tied to your personal values or desires will keep you motivated when the going gets tough.

  • Take baby steps

Big goals can feel daunting, so break them into manageable pieces. Small, consistent actions build habits that stick.

  • Track your progress

Celebrate the wins, big and small. Regular check-ins keep you motivated and help you adjust if needed.

  • Be kind to yourself

Change is never linear, and setbacks are part of the process. Instead of giving up, treat every stumble as a learning opportunity.
